Gangplank counters (Top)

Common role: Top

The best counter to Gangplank in Top is Sion: 53.1% win rate over 1,249 ranked games on patch 26.21.

A barrel-juggling bruiser with global map pressure and infinite scaling.

What makes Gangplank dangerous

Gangplank pokes with Parrley (Q), cleanses CC and heals with Orange (W), and plants powder kegs (E) that chain-explode for massive burst when he shoots them. His ultimate rains cannon fire anywhere on the map. Left to farm, he becomes an unkillable one-shot machine.

How to counter Gangplank

• 1Destroy his barrels (E) — one auto kills them and denies his whole combo.
• 2Trade when his barrels are on cooldown; raw, he is a weak melee.
• 3His W cleanses CC — don't waste your stun before he uses it.
• 4Ping his global ult for allied lanes and objectives.

What are Gangplank's weaknesses?

• ✓Weak, low-range melee if his barrels are cleared.
• ✓Barrels take time to arm — destroy them before they chain.
• ✓Falls behind hard if denied farm early.
• ✓Mana-hungry when spamming Q and barrels.

Abilities & how to counter them

What each of Gangplank's abilities does — and how to play around it.

• P
  Trial by Fire

Every few seconds, Gangplank's melee strike will set his opponent on fire.

Strong: his autos burn for bonus true damage in trades. Weak: it's just chip damage — it doesn't save him if his barrels are gone.

• Q
  Parrrley

Shoots target, plundering Gold for each enemy unit killed.

Strong: a reliable point-click poke that can proc barrels from range. Weak: high mana cost — spam it and he runs dry.

• W
  Remove Scurvy

Eats citrus to cure crowd control effects and restore Health.

Strong: cleanses all CC and heals — ruins your engage. Weak: on cooldown he's exposed; don't waste your stun before he uses it.

• E
  Powder Keg

Gangplank uncovers a powder keg at target location. If he attacks it, it explodes, spreading the attack's damage to enemies in the area, slowing them.

Strong: barrels chain-explode for enormous burst and slow. Weak: one auto destroys a barrel — clear them before they arm and chain.

• R
  Cannon Barrage

Gangplank signals his ship to bombard an area, slowing and damaging enemies.

Strong: a global cannon barrage that slows and helps allies across the map. Weak: slow-falling and telegraphed — ping it and walk out of the zone.

Itemization

Deny farm and destroy barrels — that is the matchup. Health and armor blunt his burst; hard CC before his W cleanse forces mistakes.
