Ambessa counters (Top)

Common role: Top

The best counter to Ambessa in Top is Warwick: 59.2% win rate over 405 ranked games on patch 26.21.

A war matriarch dashing after every spell into a suppressing execution.

What makes Ambessa dangerous

Ambessa dashes a short distance after EVERY ability (passive), sweeps and slams in energy-fueled combos, shields and counters with W, and her ultimate blinks to the FARTHEST champion in a line, suppressing and slamming them — an unstoppable backline execution.

How to counter Ambessa

• 1Her ult targets the FARTHEST champion in its path — don't hide behind your tank in its line.
• 2Bait her W brace, don't feed it damage — it empowers the slam.
• 3She's energy-gated: sustained fights drain her combo fuel.
• 4QSS the suppression on your carry.

What are Ambessa's weaknesses?

• ✓Energy starvation in long trades.
• ✓Dash-after-cast patterns are readable — predict the landing.
• ✓The ult line is dodgeable by repositioning perpendicular.
• ✓No sustain outside items — poke her down.

Abilities & how to counter them

What each of Ambessa's abilities does — and how to play around it.

• P
  Drakehound's Step

Entering an attack or movement command while casting an ability will cause Ambessa to dash a short distance once the ability is cast, granting her next attack bonus range, damage, and attack speed, and refunding energy.

Strong: every cast chains into a dash with an empowered attack. Weak: the dash follows the cast — predict and CC the landing spot.

• Q
  Cunning Sweep / Sundering Slam

Ambessa sweeps her twin drakehounds in a semicircle in front of her, dealing bonus damage to enemies hit by the blades. Striking an enemy will transform the next cast of this ability for a short period of time, causing her to slam her twin drakehounds down in a line in front of her, dealing bonus damage to the first enemy hit.

Strong: a sweeping slash that transforms into a slam on hit. Weak: energy-fed combos — drag the trade long and she runs empty.

• W
  Repudiation

Ambessa gains a shield, briefly braces herself, and then slams the ground to damage nearby enemies. If she blocked any non-minion damage while bracing herself, this ability will deal increased damage.

Strong: a shield-brace that slams harder if it blocks damage. Weak: don't hit the brace — hold your damage for after the slam.

• E
  Lacerate

Ambessa whips her twin drakehounds around herself, damaging and slowing nearby enemies. Initiating Drakehound's Step from this ability causes her to strike a second time at the end of its dash.

Strong: a spinning slow that chains into her dash weave. Weak: melee radius — kite the whip range.

• R
  Public Execution

Ambessa blinks to the farthest enemy champion in a line of her choosing and suppresses them upon her arrival. She then slams the enemy into the ground where they take damage and are stunned.

Strong: blinks to the FARTHEST champion in a line — suppress and slam. Weak: dodge by not being the farthest on its line; QSS breaks the suppress.

Itemization

Poke, drag trades long, and sidestep the ult line. QSS insurance for whoever stands farthest.
