Vel'Koz counters (Support)

Common role: Mid / Support

The best counter to Vel'Koz in Support is Rell: 54.5% win rate over 468 ranked games on patch 26.21.

A void artillery eye whose true-damage beam disintegrates tanks.

What makes Vel'Koz dangerous

Vel'Koz pokes from extreme range with a splitting Q, knocks up with delayed geysers, and his passive converts stacked hits into TRUE damage — his ultimate beam melts anything it tracks, tanks included. He wins every siege and poke war.

How to counter Vel'Koz

• 1His ult is a channel — any CC ends the beam instantly.
• 2The Q splits at 90° — watch the angle, not just the line.
• 3Flank him: all his damage faces forward, he's helpless up close.
• 4Armor doesn't save you at 3 passive stacks — just don't eat full combos.

What are Vel'Koz's weaknesses?

• ✓Zero mobility — the definition of dive food.
• ✓The ult roots him in place — free CC window.
• ✓Needs full combos to threaten — spread the hits.
• ✓Squishy artillery: one flank ends him.

Abilities & how to counter them

What each of Vel'Koz's abilities does — and how to play around it.

• P
  Organic Deconstruction

Vel'Koz's abilities apply Organic Deconstruction to enemies on hit. If 3 stacks are accumulated, the enemy will take a burst of true damage.

Strong: three ability hits convert to TRUE damage research. Weak: needs the full combo — spread the hits across the fight.

• Q
  Plasma Fission

Vel'Koz shoots a bolt of plasma that splits in two on reactivation or upon hitting an enemy. The bolt slows and damages on hit.

Strong: a right-angle splitting poke with huge reach. Weak: the split angle is fixed — watch the fork, not just the line.

• W
  Void Rift

Vel'Koz opens a rift to the void that deals an initial burst of damage, then explodes for a second burst of damage after a delay.

Strong: a double-wave line nuke for waveclear and stacks. Weak: narrow and repetitive — strafe the second wave.

• E
  Tectonic Disruption

Vel'Koz causes an area to explode, knocking up enemies, and knocking close enemies slightly away.

Strong: a delayed AoE knock-up that starts his full combo. Weak: small circle with a wind-up — step out on the flash.

• R
  Life Form Disintegration Ray

Vel'Koz unleashes a channelled beam that follows the cursor for 2.5 seconds that deals magic damage. Organic Deconstruction Researches enemy champions causing them to take true damage instead.

Strong: a tracking true-damage beam that melts even tanks. Weak: a CHANNEL that roots him — any CC ends it; flank behind the beam.

Itemization

Interrupt the beam, dive from angles, never siege into his poke. Mobility > resists here.
